I breathe in

Despair laps over me in waves.

Despair for my life and dreams, my children, my community, my country, and this planet.

Will the water be safe to drink?

Will the ceiling in our bedroom cave in if it rains too hard?

Will our school lose teachers to budget cuts?

Will Iraq use the bomb?

How will my children pay for this war?

Will my boys live to adulthood?

Will my headaches ever end?

Will our public school system completely disintegrate?

Will our car last one more year?

What is that shadow on my lung?

How do I stand again tomorrow to withstand the waves of despair?

My mother calls about a problem on her computer and I solve it for her.

I put another load of laundry in and find the “the rock” in my son’s pocket that is to remind him to be steady.

I look up and my son says, “look Mom, papa cardinal is back at the bird feeder.”

I talk to the principal at the boys’ school about the grant we are working on there.

I walk to the library and post office instead of driving.

I write to my senator and invite the guy who is running for mayor over to talk.

I vote.

I read.

I draw.

I breathe in

Then out

Then in again.

Nashville – Cheekwood Botanical Garden and birthdays

Cheekwood Botanical Garden

It was overcast and sprinkled during our time at the Botanical garden, but it was a great time for photos and fun with Lora.

My birthday I spent at a back to school training for 2 days. The next day Marq was reunited with his sister and performed a fantastic solo in the For Our Generation music and theater fundraiser. It gave him a chance to introduce her to some of his friends. The next day we set off for Nashville after his final performance of the weekend. We dropped grandma off at her friend’s house in Kentucky and continued on for a week of fun and birthday celebrations with Lora and her family.

Still life with coffee and one red shoe

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

This series of gratitude journal entries covers a still life that I photographed and hope to paint, a beautiful birthday card, and more flowers. I am playing around with some lovely silk ties and have figured out how to thread my sewing machine after a sabbatical from that particular tool and used it a few times to refresh that groove for my memory. There are also some early drawings and collages that I made for the covers for cassette tapes. I threw away the tapes.

I seem to have started to post primarily on Monday and Wednesday. I was starting to feel stressed about completing something to post every day. I’m over that.

“Gifts that inform, enlighten, and entertain”

Today’s title is a quote from the Signals catalog. I love this catalog. There are so many things that I want to buy because they amuse me. I have collected some of them on today’s gratitude journal entry. This way I can enjoy them forever. Some of these I have given as gifts. I really want the hand carved African “Party Animals,” but my husbands asks, “what would you do with them?” I would play with them, of course. And those boots! I can’t wear heals anymore, so they are out. (I am considering the rain boots – shhh, don’t tell).

My goal each day is to provide a metaphor for 5 things I am grateful for from each day. I’m not quite done with yesterday’s spread because it is one of my more complicated collages. It spans 6 pages and each view has something of interest. I am so proud of this collage. I believe it is one of my best so far. However, I couldn’t wait to share it so the paint on one page isn’t dry yet. The whole thing is a process anyway. What will tomorrow’s pages hold?

There are so many things that I love about summer. This week (end) the weather has been perfect and the food so abundant and delicious. Mike and I went to a park that has a labyrinth of flowers – two of my favorite things. I froze 10 pounds of organic blueberries and ate and/or froze a bushel of peaches off the peach truck from GA – two more of my favorite things. I bought back to school supplies and took so many pictures of gorgeous flowers that you may be seeing them for days. I hope you enjoy them even a little bit as much as I did! These pages are not in chronological order, but I think that is ok.
