I found this advertisement for an art school correspondence course in a 1968 Saturday Evening Post. One of the women who found herself with painting was Mrs. Robinson and that was really amusing in a “The Graduate” kind of way. I couldn’t decide if it was too condescending to be funny but decided not to get snarky about it. In a lot of ways things have changed for women in the arts and I can see that in my niece. I have found myself again in painting, so I just let it speak for me. If you go to Fine Art America you can actually read the text of the ad. Also, prints are available at Fine Art America (just click on the photo to get there).

I like how you’ve used the ad as the base for your artwork. Kind of fitting I’d say. 🙂
I’m actually curating an exhibit for our local art center and the theme is Let’s Reminisce. I’m a little uncomfortable with the tone of the ad towards women – not exactly something to “reminisce” about, but I hope I have made it something uplifting. I have a whole stack of old magazines that I wanted to use for this show and I’m having so much fun with it. I also have a painting of my grandparents that I did when I was in high school that I want to collage on top of. I’m a little nervous about that though.
