The only way to get this coloring page is to order one of my other pages from Etsy. I will send you this page as a thank you gift.

The orange and blue bookmark is a diptych – the 2 halves mirror each other. This was an interesting challenge and fun to do. Check out other tangled diptychs at the Diva’s Blog.

tissue layers 002

The tissue paper on these pages if from a Solstice party we attended. I also included some flames to represent a Solstice ceremony we participated in. However, the bulk of these pages have to do with my younger son’s return from college and the art pieces that have been accepted for a show at a gallery in Madison. They can be seen on my previous post. I have completed 2 more pieces in the series (well, almost) and I need to take them to the gallery tomorrow. So, I will see if she wants the 2 additional pieces, too. Tammy, the owner is also interested in my coloring page packets! Yipee! I’m really going to be focusing on my second set of pages in the next few weeks. There is a lot of gratitude chronicled on these pages, but it doesn’t really show up with all the layers of paint and paper. I really like how some of the images of a woman moving in circles shows through everything.

What a year! What are you grateful for from 2015? My next post will be a year in review so stay tuned!

Can you see my “pallet” for my compass rose mandala? I play with combinations of marker colors and which gel pens go well over the top. I really didn’t do much to these book pages except some journaling and attaching the various papers. The ticket is from my visit to the Milwaukee Art Museum. The watercolor landscape is from playing with the Dr. Ph. Martin’s Watercolors that my husband got me for my birthday. I have lots of scraps of watercolor paper from cutting it to make my coloring page sets (I plan to have these for sale in my Etsy store by the end of October.) and I use them to create “journaling boxes” by playing with different watercolor combinations and effects. I have been looking for a watercolor class, but I have not found one in my area. If you know of an online one you recommend I would love for you to share that information!

Here is the cover page for the Coloring Page Sets. There are 5 designs in this Mandalas set and you get 3 copies of each design. Two of the copies are on plain paper and one is on 140 lb cold press watercolor paper. I started making these because I love to color, but I really love to use watercolor pencils and the paper for most coloring books was not making me happy. I kind of think of my mission statement as contributing toward peace and beauty in the world and I think these are moving in the right direction. I hope you have a beautiful day.

Coloring club has become so popular and the participants enjoy it so much we have decided to meet twice a month. I am also assembling coloring club packets for sale in our gift shop. Last night we had a lot of fun coloring the August illustration that was also a featured mandala in the 100 mandalas coloring book.

My vision challenges continue so I am going to have to back off a little on art in the next week or so and attend to other things. But a brief gratitude list before I go: 1. I am more grateful for my husband than words can possibly express. 2. I got 20 pounds of peaches yesterday (that require immediate attention!) and I LOVE peaches. 3. Music fills my days and lifts up my spirit. 4. I have the best cats ever. 5. My son is so very talented and I am so grateful that at the end of this month we are going to be able to take him to the college he dreamed of attending. Wow. That sure is a lot. What about you?

To Attain Something Beautiful

attain something beautiful

Another Helen Keller quote today:

Remember no effort that we make to attain something beautiful is ever lost. Helen Keller.

So I tried something quite different for me. Bigger shapes and just playing with color. I’m still figuring out techniques to best use the Inktense watercolor pencils and I learned a few more things today. I found it quite enjoyable, but I did overdo it and ended up with a little bit of eye strain. So I learned something else important for tomorrow. And I think I may hang this up in our newly remodeled bathroom! Have a beautiful day.

I have completed the illustration for the next coloring club. It will be on Thursday, June 18th.

sun moon and stars

Also, I am participating in an art contest that consists of Refurbishing a piece of thrift store art provided by the gallery. There were a few pieces to choose from and here is my selection.

geese and refurb beginnings 008

I plan to decorate it with mandalas with a Tree of Life mandala as the centerpiece. There will be flower mandalas and perhaps a partial sun mandala as well. I kind of envision it as a dream that the girl is having. Here is the beginning of those works.

I have also been getting something of a refurb myself. Last week I got new glasses that have prisms ground up in the lenses. They are helping with some of the vision problems I have been having. Overall my eyes are doing ok at this point and big concerns have been put to rest for the present. Yesterday I went my first Botox treatment for my migraines. It is too early to tell if that will be successful, but I am hoping for some pain free days ahead.

My younger son will graduate from high school on Sunday and we have family coming to stay from out of town. Only a few people come to the ceremony, so we will be having a large celebration in a few weeks that lots of people are planning to attend. As you can see, I have been rather busy and will be in the next few weeks as well. I will let you see how the refurbished art turns out – I think this is a really promising method of including recycling into my art. I continue to write in my gratitude journal, but it hasn’t been as artistic as usual lately. Until then, may you find peace and happiness in your days.

I hosted my first coloring club. I made some samples of the mandala with different color schemes (Analogous, complementary, monochromatic, primary, and secondary). That was a LOT of coloring and doodling! And I have put some updated resources in the resources page. Enjoy! Here is the work & the participants in the first meeting of the coloring club. It was so fun to see how differently they approached the projects. I look forward to our next workshop!

I will get back to my gratitude journal this week. And making some new mandalas.

The 100 Mandalas Coloring Book is now available! You can get it for free on Kathryn Costa‘s True North Arts Website. If you are feeling stressed out I recommend checking out this coloring book. You can print it on the paper of your choice, so if you want to color it in with watercolors, like I did this one

painted celtic knot mandala

print it on watercolor paper. If you want to color it in with markers or colored pencil you can print it on whatever paper you have available. I prefer to color on archival quality paper so that anything that turns out well is a work of art that will last for my lifetime and I can frame it and put it one the wall or give it away.

Keep the Goal in Mind: Focus

candy 003

The prompt for Journal 52 this week is Sweet Treats. I started off painting lots of papers in pastel (for me) shades of acrylic paints and exploring interesting textures and effects with the paint. I did this on all kinds of paper scraps and copies of previous work. I loved how the circle stencils with the light blue paint turned out and included a few on the page. This use of paint was inspired by the art of Il Sung Na.

candy 001

So here is my dining room table full of lots of different papers with layers of paint and collage on them. I kind of had the robin’s egg malted milk balls in mind for my candy. The egg shapes around the blue circle are my “candy” mandala. They didn’t really turn out looking anything like the candy, but I really like how they did turn out. I’m really having fun exploring acrylic paints. I had planned to focus more on watercolors this spring, but now I’m not sure. Good thing I do yoga – I’m flexible.

I had the song “I like candy” going through my head while I was drawing the word “sweet” and something about writing that down above the phrase “keep the goal in mind” clicked. I think it is going to be my last week participating in this challenge. I think it may be distracting me from my goals. It is like art candy, fun but not feeding what I need right now.

I have continued drawing a small mandala or expanding an existing mandala and writing down my thoughts/intentions/to do list most mornings with my coffee. Because of this practice I was the featured participant this week on Kathryn Costa’s blog. She showed this journal page from last week on her blog and posted a link to my blog. Thanks Kathryn!

morning mandalas

This year my art goals have become pretty clear to me and participating in challenges is fun, but it does not always move me in the direction of my goals.

The 100 mandala challenge is moving me toward my goals in 2 big ways. One of my mandalas was used for a call to art for art for the collaborative coloring book Kathryn is assembling. I am also creating another mandala for the book. I hope to have enough coloring mandalas by October to sell sets of coloring pages for the holidays. That is one of my big goals for this year and I feel like I am making real progress toward it. The little sunflower mandala on the top page is one of the coloring mandalas I have drawn. This one was copied at 50% and I think that is too small for fun coloring of this pattern. The other way that the 100 mandalas challenge is moving me toward my goals is that I’m really excited to create art every day. At this rate I will have a nice body of art to start selling!

Is what you are doing moving you toward your goal? What help do you need? I’m finding great encouragement in the blogging community and on facebook. What do you use to keep you on track?

One more note about this weeks gratitude journal entry, the green writing on the far left side of the page is from something I have started to do at night if I am having a delay in falling asleep. I thinking of something for each letter of the alphabet that I’m grateful for from that day. This is a list of some of them. I almost never make it to “s” and I don’t think I have ever made it all the way to “z” so I added those on my journal page. So much to be grateful for!
