I have had more doctor’s appointments in NYC and found another wonderful door to share with you. I’m not sure exactly where this was, but it’s not far from the Public Library.

Thanks Norm 2.0 for giving me something to look forward to when going to the doctor and for so many beautiful door photos.

“The Met Cloisters, located on four acres overlooking the Hudson River in northern Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park, is the branch of the Museum dedicated to the art, architecture, and gardens of medieval Europe. Deriving its name from the medieval cloisters that form the core of the building, it presents a harmonious and evocative setting for more than 2,000 exceptional artworks and architectural elements from the medieval West.”

Basically, it is a museum of doors and windows and columns and such. And right now there is a special exhibit called “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” I will do a post on those as well. If you want to see more interesting door photos check out Norm 2.0.

south and pine

I have a new favorite restaurant in New Jersey! This is South+Pine in Morristown and its not just because the interior wall is lined with layers of doors and is fabulous. Also, the chef is awesome. I have so many limitations on what I can eat, but the staff was so willing to work with me and provided me with a delicious meal that did not cause me any pain at all. That hasn’t happened in a very long time. So if you are looking for a place to eat in Morris County, stop by South+Pine. I’m getting trigger point injections every Thursday morning for 6 weeks to get ready for surgery. The doctor is in NYC during most of the week but she comes to Hoboken on Thursday so we get to avoid the tunnel traffic and more expensive parking on the other side of the Hudson River. Also, Hoboken is a very charming town. We haven’t explored a lot, but there are 2 interesting churches right by the office. This is one of them.

Living close to New York City has many advantages. One of them is the proximity of world class medical care. Tuesday I met with the doctor who is going to do my surgery for endometriosis. I’m so grateful to have found her and I am feeling really hopeful. She wants me to do a lot to get ready for surgery including figuring out what dietary changes I need to make to improve my bladder and bowel problems, physical therapy to calm the muscle spasms throughout my abdomen, and a few more tests to make sure we know what all we are dealing with. I know this says Thursday Doors and if you are new to my blog you are probably wondering when I’m going to get to the door! This was on the way from the parking garage to her office. We are hoping to enjoy a little bit of the city around the appointments, but mostly I’m in too much pain and exhausted. So I’ll just have to keep my eyes open for gems like this one!

The other evening my husband and I were out gathering photos at the arboretum and he wanted to show me Acorn Hall. It wasn’t open, but we had a walk around the grounds. The weather was kind of stormy and the sky was gorgeous.

It is a very attractive building and I hope to see the inside soon. I’m guessing there are some lovely doors inside, too.

WordPress has kindly reminded me that I have now been blogging on Lunanista for 4 years. It started as an easy communication with a geographically distant friend and has become so much more.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

This was the beginning of my altered art gratitude journal. I was telling my friend about my art journal and she wanted to see pictures and here they all are after so many posts. The first year I had 269 visitors and at first I was mystified about how they found me. Since then I have found some wonderful groups that have helped me connect with people who have similar interests and concerns.

My main Zentangle connection came from Laura Harms the CZT Diva, long before I considered becoming a CZT. And Kathryn Costa got me started on the 100 Mandala Challenge!

An early photography influence and the flower of the day Diva is Cee’s Photography.

My new friend Claudia McGill turned me on to making Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) and inspired me with her painting and poetry.

And most recently I have discovered others who are as crazy about photographs of doors as I am! Thanks Norm 2.0!

Want to hear something else that’s kind of crazy? I have had 1,679 visitors so far this year! I have been so grateful for this blog that started as a record of my gratitude and a way to deal with pain and disability. It became the practice ground for my life as an artist! Thank you for all your likes and comments. I appreciate every one. Please check out my professional art blog at Jeanette Clawson Art! Let’s make something beautiful!

I don’t remember which state this adorable little church was in, but it was on the drive to or from Delaware. I believe it is in New Jersey. It is the First Baptist Church of Hopewell.

I love that we can see all the way through the church from this angle. The symmetry of this little church was delightful to me. The cemetery was also picturesque.

On the way home from Delaware we went along the river road on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River we stopped at the Stover Mill Gallery. My favorite landscape was framed by a door.

You would really need to watch your step from this one! We first encountered this lovely drive last summer when we went to Tinicum Arts Festival to meet Claudia McGill. The festival is going on next weekend and I hope to see Claudia once again (weather and health permitting).

The Breakers: Newport, Rhode Island

This week I’m sharing my photos of the Breakers in Newport for my Thursday Doors post. While I love taking pictures of so many parts of fancy houses and buildings, I’m quite enchanted by doors. I’m so grateful to have found some like minded people who also like to share photos of doors. I hope you enjoy my tour of this “cottage.”

Thursday Doors is a weekly feature allowing door lovers to come together to admire and share their favorite door photos from around the world. It is hosted by Norm 2.0.

“The Breakers is the grandest of Newport’s summer “cottages” and a symbol of the Vanderbilt family’s social and financial preeminence in turn of the century America.

Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt (1794-1877) established the family fortune in steamships and later in the New York Central Railroad, which was a pivotal development in the industrial growth of the nation during the late 19th century.” from the Newport Mansions Preservation Society.

This house had so many beautifully crafted features. Each room had magnificent doors and the views from one set of doors into the other rooms was very interesting. Some of the rooms had very distinctive styles. The first floor was extremely ornate. The second floor was comparatively simple, but probably my favorite rooms were there. The bathrooms were fantastic. I would love to have such a bathroom today! Here are the doors and doorways of the first floor.

The second floor doors were simpler.

There were secret doors that the servants could use to unobtrusively go about their business. There was a servant who’s job it was to go throughout the house and close and open window shades and shutters as the day progressed. That was the whole job, but I’m sure it kept him super busy! Old fashioned air conditioning. The pantry and the closets were amazing.

These are the rooms of the first floor. The details amazed me. The skylight is by Tiffany and it is so beautifully framed by the staircase. One of the rooms had portions of the wall “painted” with platinum. The floors and ceilings were all exquisite.

I really loved the comparative simplicity of the bedrooms and bathrooms. The kitchen was a wonder. It was fascinating to see how they used materials and design to make the work of the kitchen more efficient. The zinc and marble were utilitarian rather than a matter of style.

There was one tree on the grounds that I found particularly beautiful. I’m not sure what kind of tree it is.

I hope you have a beautiful day. For more door photos check out Norm 2.0.

So here are the doors that I didn’t include (and a few that I did) in yesterday’s post about Providence. The door with the white “fence” is on the campus of Rhode Island School of Design (RISD.)

This old house was moved to this location – seemed like a strange option to Mike and I. The gate was my favorite part.
