Today we celebrated the Solstice by going to the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. This has been something I have wanted to do this since we started planning our move to New Jersey in March. This first painting I did not capture the name of the artist, but it seems to capture the spirit of Solstice.

light

Of course this is Van Gogh’s  more familiar depiction of light.

vangogh

The textures and colors of this painting are really wonderful to see in person. Here is a close up and a different perspective.

This room was full of colors and textures that I really loved. This is the room that the light painting that I opened up the post with was in.

I discovered 2 new favorite artists! Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg. They incorporate color and texture in ways I aspire to and really created some fantastic pieces!

I have a lot more to share, but I am totally worn out for tonight. I hope you enjoy this introduction to MoMA!

p.s. We got a membership cause we are definitely coming back!

Dia: Beacon is an art museum on a different scale. Here is art you wander into! I really love the juxtaposition of these huge ellipses with all of the straight lines of the windows and ceiling. It would be interesting to see these at different times of day.

These pieces are by Richard Serra.

Dan Flavin  I love the interplay between the building and the piece. Lots of lines.

But my great love of this museum is Sol LeWitt. His art is frequently executed by other artists and I want to do some of them in my house. cape cod and dia 102

This was the first work of his I had ever seen. I planned to do this in our guest room before I saw it in the museum. Now I have a few other pieces I want to do in other areas of the house.

Instructions, I’m not sure for which piece.

The old Nabisco factory that has become the museum has beautiful forms all its own.

I hope you can find or make some beauty in your day.

interesting oil painting over collageYesterday I had a lovely day with my husband, mother, and niece at the Milwaukee Art Museum. The main galleries are closed for renovation, but the reason I wanted to go was to see the Van Gogh to Pollock Exhibit. It was fabulous! There was a painting by Camille Pissarro that I wasn’t expecting and it was a lovely surprise. I love Van Gogh, of course and it was not a work of his that I am familiar with. There was a wonderful self-portrait by Frieda Kahlo and an unusual selection by O’Keeffe. The painting that I have posted above really caught my eye because of the use of collage in the layers of paint. It is labeled as “Oil on canvas” but that does not do it justice. I cannot remember who painted it. There were so many wonderful things to see. I met this lovely new artist.

frankenthaler

There was a wonderful painting by Mark Rothko and so many more. What a great way to spend a day. I am grateful for so much beauty and inspiration in the world and that this exhibit came to my corner of the world, And that I got to share it with family.

Have a beautiful day.
