“The Met Cloisters, located on four acres overlooking the Hudson River in northern Manhattan’s Fort Tryon Park, is the branch of the Museum dedicated to the art, architecture, and gardens of medieval Europe. Deriving its name from the medieval cloisters that form the core of the building, it presents a harmonious and evocative setting for more than 2,000 exceptional artworks and architectural elements from the medieval West.”

Basically, it is a museum of doors and windows and columns and such. And right now there is a special exhibit called “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” I will do a post on those as well. If you want to see more interesting door photos check out Norm 2.0.

south and pine

I have a new favorite restaurant in New Jersey! This is South+Pine in Morristown and its not just because the interior wall is lined with layers of doors and is fabulous. Also, the chef is awesome. I have so many limitations on what I can eat, but the staff was so willing to work with me and provided me with a delicious meal that did not cause me any pain at all. That hasn’t happened in a very long time. So if you are looking for a place to eat in Morris County, stop by South+Pine. I like worn out old doors. Here are some barn doors that I found in my exploration of the Great Swamp of New Jersey. I bet you didn’t know we had a great swamp. It is prettier than the name suggests. I will definitely be going back.

The Frelinghuysen Arboretum is very near my house and as I’m recovery from surgery it is a delightful place to go for short or medium length, easy walks. The fact that they are in the middle of a tulip festival really helps keeping me excited to come back. Stay tuned for a collection of photos on the progress of the tulips.

The arboretum also quite a few fairy doors right now. Here are 2 that I found.

This week I had appointments in NYC and in Hoboken, NJ. We got to the appointment in Hoboken really early. It is almost impossible to predict how long it will take to get to these appointments. Hoboken is the last stop before NYC and the traffic is quite impressive. The first time we came it took us an hour to go the last 4 miles. So we go early and have time to find interesting doors.

These are not traditional doors, but the view was spectacular. This is outside of River View park.

The view over a little bit of New Jersey and the Manhattan skyline was lovely in the fresh snow.

I had an MRI in NYC on Tuesday evening and found a lovely door on the way from the radiology office to Chopt, where I can put together a meal I can safely eat. I don’t really know anything about this door other than that it is beautiful. I’m pretty sure it was on 73rd Street.

Here are some of my favorite doors from 2017.

dsc_1366

This is one of my favorite door pictures of 2017 and it was taken on New Year’s Day. We went to the Shore for the day and drove home through Princeton. This building was on the way home. I love the architecture and the light and I love my husband for turning around and going back so I could get this picture.

jersey-door

This is one of the houses on the Jersey Shore. The photo is from New Year’s Day. We closed the year with a trip to the shore on Christmas Day. I will post pictures of the trip tomorrow, but there are no door pictures so you will have to come back and see what we saw.

dsc_1357

I was going to add a tiled mosaic of the doors of churches of Morristown, NJ that I photographed last winter. However, I can’t seem to do that and I can’t figure out why. I tried to insert mosaics of my photos from our trip to the shore, but I wasn’t able to do that then either. Any ideas? They are visible at the end of the published post, but I can’t see them when I’m editing.

So here is my other favorite door from the Morristown churches. I really like the half open look.

These are the doors to the Baha’i’ House of Worship in Chicago, IL. We stopped there on the way back to WI for my mom’s 80th birthday.

This was from our April trip into Newark for the Cherry Blossom Festival. The building is the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

Gillette castle vegetable cellar door

I love this door from the Gillette Castle, CT. This was on the way to Providence, RI and the Certified Zentangle Teacher Seminar. There were so many fantastic doors in Rhode Island you really should check out the original posts. (There are links to 4 different posts) But here is my quirky favorite ‘door’ photo from RI.

This is across the street from the park where I met Claudia McGill in 2016. The first step from this door is quite a doozy!

Columcille Thursday doors 1

This door is from Columcille Megalith Park in Pennsylvania. I went there for the women’s retreat with my Unitarian Fellowship.

I didn’t have a lot of photos of doors from the second half of the year. I had increasing health problems that prevented me from getting out and getting pictures. The good news is that I feel like I have a really good plan to get started on the path to better health in 2018.

Here is my favorite door quote and it seems appropriate for a year in review blog post:

“The Road goes ever on and on
Down from the door where it began.
Now far ahead the Road has gone,
And I must follow, if I can,
Pursuing it with eager feet,
Until it joins some larger way
Where many paths and errands meet.
And whither then? I cannot say”
— J.R.R. Tolkien (The Fellowship of the Ring (The Lord of the Rings, #1))

WordPress has kindly reminded me that I have now been blogging on Lunanista for 4 years. It started as an easy communication with a geographically distant friend and has become so much more.

SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

This was the beginning of my altered art gratitude journal. I was telling my friend about my art journal and she wanted to see pictures and here they all are after so many posts. The first year I had 269 visitors and at first I was mystified about how they found me. Since then I have found some wonderful groups that have helped me connect with people who have similar interests and concerns.

My main Zentangle connection came from Laura Harms the CZT Diva, long before I considered becoming a CZT. And Kathryn Costa got me started on the 100 Mandala Challenge!

An early photography influence and the flower of the day Diva is Cee’s Photography.

artist trading cards

My new friend Claudia McGill turned me on to making Artist Trading Cards (ATCs) and inspired me with her painting and poetry.

And most recently I have discovered others who are as crazy about photographs of doors as I am! Thanks Norm 2.0!

Want to hear something else that’s kind of crazy? I have had 1,679 visitors so far this year! I have been so grateful for this blog that started as a record of my gratitude and a way to deal with pain and disability. It became the practice ground for my life as an artist! Thank you for all your likes and comments. I appreciate every one. Please check out my professional art blog at Jeanette Clawson Art! Let’s make something beautiful!

I don’t remember which state this adorable little church was in, but it was on the drive to or from Delaware. I believe it is in New Jersey. It is the First Baptist Church of Hopewell.

I love that we can see all the way through the church from this angle. The symmetry of this little church was delightful to me. The cemetery was also picturesque.

On the way home from Delaware we went along the river road on the Pennsylvania side of the Delaware River we stopped at the Stover Mill Gallery. My favorite landscape was framed by a door.

You would really need to watch your step from this one! We first encountered this lovely drive last summer when we went to Tinicum Arts Festival to meet Claudia McGill. The festival is going on next weekend and I hope to see Claudia once again (weather and health permitting).
