the book that I am page spread

Wow. This gratitude journal entry took me quite a while. There are layers of gratitude in this and a lot of textures. I was almost done with my ideas for the page when I came across this challenge:

The snowflake on the left hand page was not attached smoothly. I have been playing with a new way of making mandalas that combines my love of making snowflakes with mandalas. I used a makeup sponge to cover a paper snowflake surrounded by a circle cutout with blue acrylic paint onto watercolor paper.

snow flake mandala cards

After carefully lifting up the paint covered snowflake I tried to make a print of it in my gratitude journal. That is the mandala on the right hand page. The blue paint worked as an adhesive on the thin paper, so I decided to try to put the other snowflake in paint-side-up. I put E6000 spray adhesive on the page and what ever part of the sticky painted snowflake touched the adhesive there was no adjustment allowed. So, it became a spiky textured snowflake – quite in keeping with the challenge!

The lovely artwork on the right page was contributed by the daughter of a friend who purchased a set of my coloring pages. The figure’s hand is on the left-hand page – I loved the detail of nail polish and wanted this to stand out. There are layers of writing about things I am grateful for from the last 2 weeks, but the 2 biggest are YOGA and ART. I had the idea of doing the mosaic yoga letters from the first day I was able to get back to doing any yoga – I was that excited. Making these letters took a LONG time.

yoga in progress

I wanted the mandalas and the 2 words to really be the focal points of the pages at this point so I was going to make the background a blue wash. It was about that point that I found the texture challenge. I was not having any luck getting the snowflake on the right to do anything I wanted so I covered the page with a combination of pumice gel medium, gesso, water, and blue acrylic paint. The overview photo doesn’t capture the texture of the combination very well. I used a tissue to clean up the blue paint and I decided to add one layer of the tissue to add texture to the right hand page. Here is a slightly better view of the left hand page and also shows the found word poem that became the title of the page spread. After I cut out all the letters for both yoga and art I cut out the words that intrigued me from the leftover bits of the page from a copy of The Pilgrim’s Progress that is over 100 years old!

So here is the poem that left me breathless in its appropriateness.

art step four

I am amused that I’m having technical difficulties arranging the photos of my cut out letters for ART. The process also shows my frustration with how they were turning out. I was amazed that the mulberry paper and tissue paper turned out a lot more boring looking than I had hoped. I ended up also adding some silver Liquitex paint marker to them and more gel pen marks after all of these steps. Adding blue acrylic paint to the page helped them pop out more.

art detail

I am happy with how the layout turned out as a whole and it works with last week’s Journal 52 prompt of Child’s Play. Between the guest artist and the snowflake base I felt like this and my willingness to play with my materials are thoroughly captured in this page layout. I’m actually happy with the mandala that started out backwards, too. I surrounded it with some Golden Iridescent Pearl mixed with the same blue acrylic paint and I love how that turned out. So here is my 100 Mandalas mandala 59 of 100.mandala 59 0f 100

Thanks for taking the time to make it through that whole post! Have a beautiful day!

yoga joy

Joy is the most important element of yoga to me. My yoga teacher is a proponent of feeling joy in the poses or modifying them to meet your needs. This is just the right fit for me. We did a lot of yoga in 2 days and I really loved it. I had to sit out part of a standing mediation that triggered my migraine, but that was after a lot of really excellent practice. We did lots of Sun Salutations as the sun sparkled on Green Bay. We did circle balance poses that are so beautiful and exhilarating. As we rested on our right side at one point the beauty of another yogini’s feet with the sunshine and shadows was so beautiful I wished I could stop to draw them or take a photograph. Oh, and we ate! Yummy and healthy foods. We started our days with silence and ended with talking and laughter. It was so good to see old friends and make new ones.

elements of yoga retreat

The Journal 52 prompt for this week is Elements. That made me think of the Tibetan Buddhist styles of representing the elements in art. As I was drawing them, I realized that each one corresponded with an element of yoga.

Air – clouds –  breathing

Water – the waves of Lake Michigan and Green Bay – and flow

Earth – rocks – grounding, finding my foundation

Fire – flames – generating some heat!

The mandala on this page is inspired by the shirt of one of my new friends at the retreat.

I was also inspired by the Diva’s challenge to use the tangle pattern Tipple as the background for my “joy” page. It provides just the effervescence I was looking for! To see other interpretations of her challenge check out her Diva Challenge.

Here is the completed illustration that I mentioned in my Diva Challenge post. naturally high The original is a little bigger than my scanner, but I think you get the idea. I’m going to sell it as part of a painting pages/coloring book. How much should I charge for each page? I plan to print them on cold press watercolor paper.

yoga stencils

I finally made a few yoga stencils from my photographs of my lovely yoga teacher. The facing page is a remnant from a wallpaper sample my mom and I played with when making a photo collage earlier this week. I have also started another  Zentangle Inspired Art piece inspired by the lovely Helen. Included here is a portion of my sketch for that piece.

fall colors and fun
Fall in Wisconsin makes taking photographs so fun and easy. I love walking through the crisp air and listening to the leaves crunch under my feet. Now that I have an iPhone I always have a camera with me, too! These morning fog on the river photos were taken with my iPhone.

at play practice
I have returned to my Dharma teachings class on Tuesdays. It is so healing for me. The Venerable Chodun taught us about the 8 breaths mediation and I have been practicing them every day. I have been working on letting some difficult feelings go because they really have a negative impact on my health and well-being. This 8 breath practice has been so helpful. On the right hand is my husband walking right through all those balloons I am letting go. He has been my hero this week. For this, and for so many other things, I am grateful.

phicops and diva dance duotangle

I got a lot of inspiration this last weekend from Julie Fei-Fan Balzer on using primary colors and simple patterns to create fun journal pages. Once I got started painting I really went crazy. I am so happy with the flower that was a result of a lot of playing around with paint. It feels like it has been a long time since I have done one of the Diva’s challenges. these are both new tangle patterns to me, I’m pretty sure. I couldn’t quite get my Phicops on the lower part of my J to work out how I wanted it to, but I like how the tile as a whole turned out. I have really had a rewarding art week doing a lot of drawing and painting. I have also enjoyed settling in to the fall routine. I’m so happy to be back to yoga with my friends. However, I am super happy to still have some of summer’s BLTs left for the year, too. I have had some wonderful surprises come in the mail and have enjoyed playing with different ways of creating patterns.

Peace Now

I have been out in the world having adventures and have gotten way behind on posting! Please forgive me. Before we left for our adventures I was going to post a few pages but our internet access was unavailable. I had been listening to more Jack Kornfield meditations and the line that really resonated with me is “What would you have to let go of to be at peace right now?”

  peace right now

Here is the page for another gratitude workshop. I have started to make up a stencil and some coordinating papers or other related items to give out at each workshop as a door prize. I’m having fun with it. Next month’s workshop will be using back to school supplies in fun and creative ways with some school supplies as door prizes.

make art everyday

Here is the Thursday before the trip (see the “balance effort and ease” as our yoga class intention) and it included a lot of packing and other preparations. As in the yoga intention, I have to be careful to balance effort and ease with travel and travel preparation so as not to exacerbate my migraines. Having Joanne Sharpe’s Whimsical Letting book provided some lovely moments of ease. I also included the first day of our trip on this page. We started listening to the audiobook of Bill Bryson’s Walk in the Woods. What a great way to start our adventure!

packing and setting out

I did sporadic journaling on the trip and I have a lot of components that I need to bring together. I hope to update you on the trip soon!

Today I will let go of too many things on my to do list so that I can find peace. I will make time for meditation after putting a load of laundry in the washer. How can you find peace today?

Challenge Completion

Challenge Completion

This first page layout is from Saturday of the yoga retreat. Kelly’s 30-day challenge prompt was sunshine and that was so appropriate for this day. You can see the beautiful view from the yoga studio and some of the fun we enjoyed together. It was a beautiful day full of sunshine and yoga and laughter.

yoga retreat Friday

This second page layout is actually from Friday. Kelly didn’t have a prompt for that day of the challenge and that worked out well for me. I was using sharpies and masking tape as our simple supplies for the gratitude workshop that I taught during the retreat and I used this page as an example. I included some of the materials from the retreat and did a little gratuitous doodling.

yoga retreat Sun and home

This post includes Kelly’s prompt from yesterday, woven and some images/ideas from the retreat. The facing page is from today. The challenge was to complete the Diva’s  challenge.

iamthedivaczt

I really did not like doing this particular challenge even though I liked the idea. In Zentangle you use guidelines called strings and the idea here was to superimpose one string over another. I decided to use one that I could try grid tangles because I tend to avoid them for the most part. That might be why I didn’t really like this. Anyway. I also had acupuncture today, a delightful dinner with my son, and he pointed out a lovely rainbow that was integrated into the sunset. For those things and so many more, I am grateful.

Yoga Retreat

I have been taking LOTS of pictures in the last few days. Tomorrow I hope to catch up on Kelly’s 30 day challenge and update my gratitude journal posts. In the meantime I wanted to share this photo that I submitted to one of my favorite photography blogs http://toemail.wordpress.com/2014/06/29/wharariki-beach-north-west-south-island-new-zealand/
