Exquisite Yarn

Cee, did you know you move through my days with me now? Today I was at my local yarn shop for Sit and Knit and I bought an exquisite yarn. It is really fine and I had to hand wind it while chatting with friends. One of them said, “That is so beautiful you should take a picture of it.” So I did. And I knew it would be the perfect oddball challenge photo.

The reason the photo is of the yarn on my plate is because this post is also an

Ode to a Grilled Cheese Sandwich.

I love grilled cheese.

Grilled cheese with jelly is a childhood favorite.

This was grilled munster with some grated sharp chedder melted over chopped marinated artichoke hearts.

It was a blessing.

Good day to you all.

collaged mandala 002

Sometimes the planets align in such a way that joy abounds. This week Kathryn at 100 Mandalas posted a lovely tutorial about creating a mandala on a collaged background and then the Journal 52 prompt for this week was Collage. Joy! I’m rather fond of collage, as you may have noticed. It is also one of the wonderful things about altered book journaling that is so fun. I love the way the tree on the right hand page extends the energy of the mandala to the edges of the page. I used a post it with my to do list, some spirographed papers, and papers that represent my gratitude for various people in my life for the background. Then I just dove right in with my Prismacolor markers. They kind of soak into the gesso, so I may try this with acrylic paint on top next time. It was really fun to do the mandala creation in color. I generally start with a black and white mandala, but it was easier to experiment with different design elements using the big colored markers right from the start. All in all I really enjoyed the journaling and mandala creation for this week.

Have you tried something new this week? How did you like the process? The result? Check out all the beautiful mandalas at

You can see different art journal pages on the Journal 52 blog and the link to their Flicker gallery. I hope you can find some inspiration today!

invention of wings 001

I am having a lot of technical difficulties with my old laptop so my posting and response to comments may be a little sporadic. I would like to apologize for that in advance. And also for any oddities in the post itself. I’m having problems with viewing the entire post which makes typing and editing tricky. Anyway, these mandalas were completed while I listened to the absolutely fabulous book The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd. I noticed that the figure of the woman on the left hand page was posed so well for the addition of wings. Synchronicity. I love it. One of my favorite parts of altered book journaling.

As you can see I have continued my morning mandala practice many days. I have also been working on a series of color theory studies using 2 large mandalas that I drew for coloring. Below is a scanned version of my analogous, blue, green, yellow mandala. And I have also included a photograph of my completed purple, blue, green mandala. I have been using gel pens on them and they don’t scan very well so I’m playing with photographing them and scanning them.

Here is a close up of the little black and white mandala from the left page.

Keep the Goal in Mind: Focus

candy 003

The prompt for Journal 52 this week is Sweet Treats. I started off painting lots of papers in pastel (for me) shades of acrylic paints and exploring interesting textures and effects with the paint. I did this on all kinds of paper scraps and copies of previous work. I loved how the circle stencils with the light blue paint turned out and included a few on the page. This use of paint was inspired by the art of Il Sung Na.

candy 001

So here is my dining room table full of lots of different papers with layers of paint and collage on them. I kind of had the robin’s egg malted milk balls in mind for my candy. The egg shapes around the blue circle are my “candy” mandala. They didn’t really turn out looking anything like the candy, but I really like how they did turn out. I’m really having fun exploring acrylic paints. I had planned to focus more on watercolors this spring, but now I’m not sure. Good thing I do yoga – I’m flexible.

I had the song “I like candy” going through my head while I was drawing the word “sweet” and something about writing that down above the phrase “keep the goal in mind” clicked. I think it is going to be my last week participating in this challenge. I think it may be distracting me from my goals. It is like art candy, fun but not feeding what I need right now.

I have continued drawing a small mandala or expanding an existing mandala and writing down my thoughts/intentions/to do list most mornings with my coffee. Because of this practice I was the featured participant this week on Kathryn Costa’s blog. She showed this journal page from last week on her blog and posted a link to my blog. Thanks Kathryn!

morning mandalas

This year my art goals have become pretty clear to me and participating in challenges is fun, but it does not always move me in the direction of my goals.

The 100 mandala challenge is moving me toward my goals in 2 big ways. One of my mandalas was used for a call to art for art for the collaborative coloring book Kathryn is assembling. I am also creating another mandala for the book. I hope to have enough coloring mandalas by October to sell sets of coloring pages for the holidays. That is one of my big goals for this year and I feel like I am making real progress toward it. The little sunflower mandala on the top page is one of the coloring mandalas I have drawn. This one was copied at 50% and I think that is too small for fun coloring of this pattern. The other way that the 100 mandalas challenge is moving me toward my goals is that I’m really excited to create art every day. At this rate I will have a nice body of art to start selling!

Is what you are doing moving you toward your goal? What help do you need? I’m finding great encouragement in the blogging community and on facebook. What do you use to keep you on track?

One more note about this weeks gratitude journal entry, the green writing on the far left side of the page is from something I have started to do at night if I am having a delay in falling asleep. I thinking of something for each letter of the alphabet that I’m grateful for from that day. This is a list of some of them. I almost never make it to “s” and I don’t think I have ever made it all the way to “z” so I added those on my journal page. So much to be grateful for!

Spring Cleaning

Last week the Journal 52 prompt was Spring Cleaning and that is what I was doing! We had overnight guests over the weekend and it was so much fun.

spring cleaning 001

I have started to do a quick mandala in the morning with my coffee. I write down things that come to mind and my to do list and intention for the day. I’m not managing it every morning, but it is a nice way to start the day. That is what is going on the left hand page. The right hand page is my spring cleaning page. I used the palm leaves I got from church as a mask. I dabbed a cosmetic sponge in 2 shades of green paint and a dark blue and yellow and dabbed it all over the leaves. After that was dry I painted in the leaves using the lighter shade of green, yellow ocher and white. Then I journaled over the whole thing with my white Sakura pen.

Inspiration Board and Mandala and Minions

I have fallen behind in the Journal 52 prompts. I fear I may have too many goals or too many deviations from my goals. That awareness was actually the result of this prompt and the daily mandala practice that I will be posting about later this week.

inspiration board 001

So, the right hand page of my Inspiration board includes some clippings of interesting fabric combinations of color and texture that I want to play with and some clippings of photos of interesting jewelry from catalogs as well. Joanne Sharpe is included as my representative for everything I have discovered through Cloth, Paper, Scissors – my absolute favorite magazine. I included a slightly Zentangled mandala, because of well, I tangle. Also, I collect cards and photos of cards by a variety of artists who inspire me. Included are some cards from the Unicef catalog. I always have a box or 2 of these on hand. They have so many beautiful cards – so inspiring in so many ways! Some of my current favorite children’s book illustrators are Demi and Il Sung Na. I have included small copies of my favorite pages from their books. They inspired the mandala on the right. In fact, the stars are cut from copies of pages of books by Il Sung Na.  The waves were inspired by Demi’s book about Rumi. And the lounging cat is my Bonhomie baby.inspiration board 002

And I decorated Easter eggs. Nothing says Easter like Minions!
