Here is why I haven’t been posting a whole lot lately.

I hosted my first coloring club. I made some samples of the mandala with different color schemes (Analogous, complementary, monochromatic, primary, and secondary). That was a LOT of coloring and doodling! And I have put some updated resources in the resources page. Enjoy! Here is the work & the participants in the first meeting of the coloring club. It was so fun to see how differently they approached the projects. I look forward to our next workshop!

I will get back to my gratitude journal this week. And making some new mandalas.

outside in 002

The Journal 52 prompt for the past week has been Outside In. I have been working on a tree of life mandala stencil for a larger piece I’m doing and I played with that this week. Oddly enough the tree developed rather organically and I’m happy with the results. I was going to Zentangle the negative spaces, but I started to journal in them instead and I like how it turned out. The facing page is a labyrinth I drew covered by cutouts from my favorite labyrinth in Wisconsin. It is an Earth sculpture in a park about 45 miles from where I live. I hope to get there a few more times this summer because as the different flowers bloom the labyrinth changes. My husband also loves this place. I have included a few quotes and to do lists and intentions as well as things I’m grateful for on these pages. One of the ideas that has been threading its way through my week is that nothing can survive without food. What have I been feeding this week? I have a lot of anxiety and this has been a helpful question to see when I catch myself feeding the anxiety. I’m trying to turn to feeding more productive and nurturing emotions and attributes and have dusted off my home yoga practice as a result. What have you been feeding this week?

The 100 Mandalas Coloring Book is now available! You can get it for free on Kathryn Costa‘s True North Arts Website. If you are feeling stressed out I recommend checking out this coloring book. You can print it on the paper of your choice, so if you want to color it in with watercolors, like I did this one

painted celtic knot mandala

print it on watercolor paper. If you want to color it in with markers or colored pencil you can print it on whatever paper you have available. I prefer to color on archival quality paper so that anything that turns out well is a work of art that will last for my lifetime and I can frame it and put it one the wall or give it away.

100 Mandalas, altered art book, art journal, gratitude, Washi tape

observe blog post 001

The Journal 52 prompt for last week was Observations. My gratitude journal is intended to focus my observations on positive things in my life and I include them in my journal in words and/or images. Framing them with washi tape makes it so much fun. My morning mandala practice fell quickly to the wayside while I was not feeling well. However, this cold and damp Monday morning led me to introspection and a return to the practice. I started a morning mandala last week with a little bit of Spirograph and I’m really happy with how it turned out. I did do some intermittent morning introspection and intention setting some days and I included my mandala work from the last 2 weeks or so. The little colored ones are from my color theory study that I have been working on. I plan to do a post of the whole bunch when I’m done with them. I have a busy day today so I need to get going. I hope you have a beautiful day. Thanks for stopping by.

I played with wet on wet watercolor and then went over some of the colors to create more contrast. The scan is not great. SANYO DIGITAL CAMERA

Sorry I have been unavailable for a while. I’m not sure if I had the flu or food poisoning, but I’m starting to feel better and I just kept adding layers to my journal pages. That worked well with the Journal 52 prompt of Treasures. My sons, husband and cats are my greatest treasures (not necessarily in that order). But in the time since my last Gratitude Journal posting we have had Earth Day and that is definitely one of my greatest treasures, too. I thought it was wonderful serendipity that the page layout for earth day was leaves and I wanted that to come through. The combination of multiple layers and the bottom layer showing through is a tricky thing, but it worked! I like the practice of writing every day and layering my writing so that none of it is really legible. This was not my most positive journaling week and I’m just fine with those words not being retained for posterity.

I have included a quote by Pema Chodrun: “Practice not causing harm to anyone – yourself or others – and every day, do what you can to be helpful.”

I don’t usually journal or blog about my worries, however, I have been having vision problems on top of my usual migraines and I did not pass my most recent Visual Field eye exam. They want me to retake it in 6 weeks, but I’m rather worried. I have been monitored for possible multiple sclerosis for a few years and this could be a bad sign. The headaches are something of an impediment to art making, but the vision problems are an even greater one. If that means they can solve some of the eye problems that would be ok. So far I can still make art and that is a good thing. I did some big paper painting this week and cut shapes out. That is where the center of the eye came from and the little flower outlines.

With being sick I fell out of my morning mandala habit, but I have continued my bedtime A, B, C, s of gratitude so I will share a bit of an overview here. I’m not sure if I described it or not but what I do is as I’m laying in bed having difficulties falling asleep I start with A and think of things for which I’m grateful for each letter of the alphabet. I rarely get to the end of the alphabet, so some of these are made up today.

A – art, Amanda, animals, avacado, aquacize

B- Bridget, Bonhommie, books, bread, bananas, batik, blogging, blogs

C – cats, Carla, creativity, colors

D – daylight, delight, Dawn, drawing

E – Earth, Elementary, Enola

F – Friends, food, fun, facebook

G – grass, gesso, gel pens, Garfunkle and Oats, Gage, ginger ale

H – Hannah, happiness, hair, home, Hexi

I – inspiration, ink, ideas

J – Jessalyn, Janine, Jacqueline, Joanie, jellybeans, joy, Jill

K – kindness, Katmandu

L – light, love, laughter

M- Mike, Marq, Mom, money, meditation, medicine, mandalas, music

N – Night, Nicky, Nora Jones

O – open heart, oatmeal

P – paper, people, pets, purple, painting, Paul, plumbing, Pat, photography

Q – quiet

R – rooms, restaurants

S – Shannon, Sarah, silliness, synchronicity

T – truth, tv, teeth

U – underpants

V – vaccines, vegetarians, vegetables

W – Watercolors, words, writing, Winzton, WordPress

X = eXcitement

Y – YMCA, youths, yoga

Z – zebras, zippers

These are not in any particular order and the list goes on, but these are the ones I can bring to mind right now. So much to be grateful for. And isn’t it strange what you think of in the middle of the night?

What do you do when you can’t fall asleep?
